95 Indian fishermen trapped in Bangladesh to be released on the occasion of Gangasagar Tirth

A total of 95 Indian fishermen who have been detained in Bangladesh for the past three months will be released this Sunday, following efforts by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the Indian government. The release will take place in Kakdwip, South 24 Parganas, where both the fishermen and their families will gather for a heartfelt reunion. As part of the process, the Government of India will also return 90 Bangladeshi fishermen, showcasing the spirit of cooperation between the two nations.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who has been instrumental in securing the release of these fishermen, will personally meet the 95 Indian fishermen on January 6 at Gangasagar during her two-day visit. The fishermen will be honored with citations and an honorarium of ₹10,000 from the state government. Additionally, they will be enrolled in various welfare schemes aimed at supporting their livelihoods.

This move comes after multiple appeals by Mamata Banerjee to the central government and coordinated diplomatic efforts. Chief Secretary Manoj Pant also played a crucial role, writing to the Ministry of External Affairs to expedite the process. Talks between the governments of India and Bangladesh have been ongoing, resulting in the release of the fishermen and six of their boats.

The fishermen had been detained in Bangladesh's jails for several months due to various reasons, with their return being a priority for both governments. The diplomatic exchange reflects the growing collaboration between the two neighboring nations to resolve such humanitarian issues. The exchange is expected to strengthen relations between India and Bangladesh while bringing relief to the affected families.

The state government’s gesture not only highlights Mamata Banerjee’s commitment to the welfare of fishermen but also underscores the importance of fostering peace and cooperation in the region. The honorarium and welfare schemes will assist the fishermen in rebuilding their lives after their difficult ordeal.
